The instructions are clear and simple enough for those who aren't gourmet cooks. This is NOT a book for those who choose recipes based on photographs, but for those who have a basic idea for what they want to make...but maybe with a new twist. Many of the recipes have alternate versions for those who like to experiment and wherever there is an option for homemade ingredients (like mayonnaise or sauces) the book refers to the specific page where they can be found. Overall, this is the best How To I've found so far. I'm buying the vegetarian version for a friend! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Complete and throurough food bible. (27 December 2008)Well organized, thorough. Easy to cross reference and find recipes quickly and easily. Includes all the basic details without insulting your intelligence. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Delightful (24 December 2008)I just love Mark Bittman's cookbooks. Just wish there was more Hawaiian recipes in the book. But I really recommend it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Better books around (17 December 2008)I will admit up front that I do not have this edition, I own the prior one (yellow cover) but I can't see how they possibly made it that much better. It was quite poor to begin with. If you need a cookbook that will take you from novice to expert, teach you the basics and has many classic recipes like goulash, coq au vin and also teach you how to properly set a table then the New Doubleday Cookbook is the one to get. Bittman falls short on so many levels and it's clear that it's been overhyped. Perhaps all those glowing celebrity testimonials were paid for? His suggestions for seasoning are very helpful and good. | ![]() |
